Apollo-Soyuz

The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) was the first manned space flight conducted jointly by two nations.

Both craft were launched on July 15th 1975 and docked two days later.

The Apollo spacecraft carried a specially built docking adaptor.

The main (scientific) objectives were:

  1. To gain experience maneuvering and docking spacecraft
  2. To develop an international standard docking mechanism
  3. To try "in-flight intervehicular crew transfer".

In addition to this 28 life science experiments were carried out during the mission.

The mission was a success with both crafts returning safely to Earth, Soyuz on 21st July in the USSR and Apollo on 24th July near Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.
