Shuttle-Mir missions formed part of the preliminary preparations required for the assembly of the International Space Station (ISS).
11 Shuttle-Mir rendezvous missions were flown over a four-year period (1994-1998) to build joint space experience and to commence joint scientific research projects.
Mir offered a unique opportunity for long-duration space flights. ISS designers used Mir as a test site for space station hardware, materials and construction methods.
