Robert (Bob) E Cooper (1934-2002) Tenure: Assistant Lecturer 1958-1961 Lecturer 1961-1979 Administrator 1979-1999

Anyone who was in the Department in the second half of the last century will have fond memories of Bob Cooper.

He did his first degree in pharmacy at Brighton Polytechnic, then came to UCL as one of Albert Wassermann's Ph.D. students, working on physical aspects of polyelectrolytes and on electron transfer processes, and they had a number of publications in these fields from 1957 and 1967. He was appointed to the staff as an assistant lecturer in 1958, then lecturer in 1979, and, on top of his teaching duties, he acted as assistant to Dr. J.N.E. Day who was the Department's financial manager. He succeeded Dr. Day in that position in 1962, and after Professor McGlashan had become head of department, he transferred in 1979 from the academic to the administrative staff, and continued as financial manager until he retired in 1999, travelling daily from his native Shoreham on Sea, near Brighton. He died on 1 November, 2002. He had a foot in both the academic and administrative camps of the college, and, never one to bend the rules, he would always cooperate in helping you to find ways round them.
