T A Orme

Tenure:
Lecturer 1883 - 1884

As with so many others of this period, we know almost nothing about Temple Orme. He was in the department briefly towards the end of Alexander Williamson's tenure as Head of Department. The fact that he wrote several school books and provided historical introductions to registers of students of University College School (then located in Gower Street close to the College) suggests he may have been a teacher there. His "Science of Heat" ran to at least seven editions between 1869 and 1886.
The following is a list of his books held by the British Library:

  • ORME. Temple Augustus, Concrete Arithmetic; an introduction to the elements of the abstract science of number, etc. London, 1872. 8o.
  • ORME. Temple Augustus, Concrete Arithmetic; an introduction to the elements of the abstract
science of number for young children. pp. viii. 114. O. Newmann & Co.: London, 1892. 8o.
  • ORME. Temple Augustus, An Introduction to the Science of Heat. London, 1869. 8o.
  • ORME. Temple Augustus, An introduction to the science of heat, designed for the use of schools
and candidates for university matriculation examinations. 1869
  • ORME. Temple Augustus, An Introduction to the Science of Heat. Second edition. London, 1871. 8o.
  • ORME. Temple Augustus, An Introduction to the Science of Heat. (Seventh edition.) pp. xi. 175.
Groombridge and Sons: London, 1886. 8o.
  • ORME. Temple Augustus, Matriculation Chemistry. Chemistry of the non-metallic elements and their
compounds. pp. xiii. 240. Lawrence & Bullen: London, 1892. 8o.
  • ORME. Temple Augustus, Rudiments of Chemistry. pp. 127. Sonnenschein & Co.: London, 1886. 8o.

He also revised a textbook by an unfortunately named author:

BARFF. Frederick Settle, An Introduction to Scientific Chemistry; designed for the use of schools, etc. New edition.. Revised by Temple Orme. pp. xvi. 200. O. Newman & Co.: London, 1893. 8o.

edited a travel book:

Thomas. William Cave, Murray's expedition to Borneo. An episode in the early life of Edwin Robin Thomas. edited by Temple Orme, 1893

and contruted historical introductions to the following:

  • University College School, London. Alphabetical and chronological Register for 1831-1891. With historical introduction by Temple Orme. LONDON. III. Miscellaneous Institutions, Societies, and
other Bodies. University College School pp. iv. 326. London, [1892.] 8o.
