Samuel Smiles FRS

Samuel Smiles was on the staff at UCL until 1919 when he moved first to Newcastle and then to the Anglican Institution in the Strand.

As a chemist, Smiles is remembered for the eponymous rearrangements of substituted aromatics. These were first described in a series of about a dozen papers beginning in 1931 ( J. Chem. Soc. , 1931 , 914).
