Samuel Sugden

Tenure:
Professor 1937 - 1951

Sammy Sugden was a lanthanide chemist who amongst other things worked on the neutron capture and radioactivity of lanthanide nuclides (see for example Marsh & Sugden, Nature, 1935, 136 , 102). He also successfully purified yttrium by basicity precipitation using an air stream saturated with ammonia vapour (J. Chem. Soc. 1949, 135) a method first developed by Trombe (C. R. Acad. Sci. 1942, 215 & 1943, 216 & 1947, 225, 1156). The method was however completely superseded by Spedding's development of ion exchange resins as part of the Manhattan Project.
