History - High Resolution Spectrographs of the Past
The 6 m Ebert spectroscope built by GW King 1953-1955. The instrument, which had a resolution of 0.1 cm -1 at 5000 Å was located in the basement of the Old Chemistry building (The Ramsay and Forster Laboratories) in Gower Place.

This was later replaced by the 4 m Czerny-Turner spectrograph, affectionately referred to as the Yellow Submarine. It was designed and built by John H Callomon and G G Chandler 1967-1969 and in the early 90's was considered one of the Hidden Wonders of UCL. The resolution of the instrument was 0.023 cm -1 at 5000 Å. This was housed in LG8 of the Christopher Ingold building until it was dismantled in 1995 when Dr Steve Price inherited the lab.
