An organic chemist, he is remembered as a dapper and fastidiously-dressed man who had a Poirot-like walk. He was invariably wore a pin-striped suit with a bowler hat and carried an umbrella. He travelled in from somewhere near Beaconsfield every day (see V G Jolly's description ). He seems to have been fairly wealthy as he was a member of the Savage Club. Alwyn Davies remembers him playing the clarinet at Lab Dinners after the war.
