Henry Terrey Tenure: Lecturer 1921 - 1937 Reader 1937 - 1952 Professor 1952 - 1954 Special Lecturer 1954 - ?

Henry Terrey was an Inorganic Chemist who did a mix of synthetic studies and analysis by polarography, a technique invented by Heyrovsky who had studied with Ramsay. Alwyn Davies recalls that he was known as "Mr Terrey" suggesting that he never got his PhD. "He was the admissions tutor who let me in ( because he knew my brother), and used to come round dropping cigarette ash in my gravimetrics in case I had lost a bit."

Terrey's publications make for intriguing reading. His first paper is on fat-free suppositories made from cocoa butter and kaolin, from the Pharmazeutisches Zeitung, suggesting he may have spent time studying in Germany. His last was published in an Iraqi journal. In 1937 he recorded the first UV/Visible spectra of samarium dichloride, recorded in ice-cold aqueous solution, using CO₂ or hydrogen as a blanketing gas. A non-trivial piece of work. In the paper reference is made to a "Richards sampling box". Could this an early reference to the use of a dry box?

His publications suggest that he withdrew from research after the Second World War.

He was remembered in 1982, by his ex-graduate student V G Jolly, who was at UCL from 1919-1924:

"Here it might be of some interest to say that in the 1921-23 period, my postgraduate dates, three of the staff, namely Masson, Terrey and Gilbert, and three of the postgraduates namely Gibson, Gibby and Jolly occupied the three rooms at the end of the ground floor Inorganic Lab. (as it was then) near the side door opening out on to Gordon Street (conveniently placed, for those who had a key, if you wanted to slip out across the road to the Express Dairy Co. for mid-morning coffee). Gibson worked in Masson's lab. which accommodated a lot of mercury in the floorboards, and his companion was a fellow named Gibby who I believe got a post at Durham University. I have a photograph of the two of them. What Lionel Felix Gilbert did I never knew. Sartorially he was the very opposite of Terrey who was never very particular about his dress. I can imagine the dapper Gilbert travelling in from the London greenbelt, complete with Times, furled umbrella and bowler hat!" A photograph of Terrey, taken in 1923, confirms Jolly's impression. But then, few members of the current staff, male anyway, can really be described as stylish......
