Gerald King was a grad student here in the Department during which time he built the 6 m Ebert Spectrograph which lived in the basement of the old Chemistry department. He won the Ramsay medal in 1951/52. King stayed on as a molecular spectroscopist in the Department for a few years. He left UCL in 1957 for Canada (yes, another one!) where he taught at McMaster University where there is a webpage for him .

Prof King was the author of a classic textbook "Spectroscopy and Molecular Structure" published by Holt Rinehart and Winston, 1964. A copy dedicated to C K Ingold is in the archives of the Department.
